Single-use plastics are being banned at Durham Region’s headquarters as governments across Canada move toward a circular procurement future.

After a number of debates in regional council chambers, Durham is eliminating single use plastics at its own headquarters.

Bottled water (with the exception of carbonated water) will no longer be sold at regional headquarters.

The region is encouraging visitors to bring their own refillable water bottles that can be filled at one of two filling stations located in the building.

Take out containers from the deli area and hot table in the cafeteria are also fully compostable, and plastic straws have been replaced with compostable paper straws.

“These initiatives are a great first step to eliminate single use plastics and reduce our environmental impact at regional headquarters,” said Jenni Demanuele, Durham’s director of business services, works department.
