A technical guide for the ban on 6 types of single-use plastics has been released by the Government of Canada following Environment and Climate Change Canada’s June 20, 2022 announcement.

This technical guide provides details for anyone who is subject to the regulations and their requirements.

The ban affects businesses and organizations that associate (utilize, manufacture, import, export, sell, or distribute) the following single-use plastic items:

  • checkout bags;
  • cutlery;
  • foodservice ware made from or containing problematic plastics that are hard to recycle;
  • ring carriers;
  • stir sticks; and
  • straws (with some exceptions).
