The City of Winnipeg is considering implementing a plastic bag ban.

A City of Winnipeg ban on single-use plastic bags isn’t on the way right now but will be considered again early next year.

On Thursday, council’s water, waste and the environment committee voted to lay over a call to implement a local bag ban, until a five-year waste management review wraps up in early 2019.

The decision came after Winnipeg water and waste director Moira Geer argued the municipality should take its direction from the province on the file.

“For the city to ban plastic bags, to me that would require … (direction)from the province as well,” said Geer.

Geer said a ban may sound straightforward but it could affect provincial stewardship programs and benefit from involvement from that government.
